چکیده

Pertussis, or whooping cough, notifications, and deaths declined dramatically after the introduction of mass vaccination in the 1950s, to the extent that many states stopped collecting notifications. However, since 1990, notification rates have increased noticeably from the record low levels seen in the 1970s and 1980s in all Australian states and territories, including NSW. A number of factors, other than a true increase in the underlying incidence of pertussis, may account for this. These factors include: improved surveillance, the introduction of direct notification of cases by laboratories, and the introduction of additional means of laboratory diagnosis such as serology and nucleic acid testing. In contrast to notifications, criteria for coding hospital separations or deaths due to pertussis are less likely to have been influenced by these changes, thus providing a data source that is more consistent over time to evaluate for HAS PERTUSSIS INCREASED IN NSW OVER THE PAST DECADE? Pertussis in South Australia 1893 to 1996.

This study describes trends in reports of pertussis in South Australia. Data were analysed from three sources: mortality data since 1893 from South Australian yearbooks, notification data from 1917, and hospitalisation data for pertussis or related complications since July 1985. Crude and age-specific rates of mortality, notifications and hospitalisation were compared. Pertussis peaked in 3 to ...

Do variations in pertussis notifications reflect incidence or surveillance practices? A comparison of infant notification rates and hospitalisation data in NSW.

The incidence of pertussis cannot be directly measured; estimates are generally based on data sources such as notifications, hospitalisations and deaths. However, these data represent only a proportion of the total cases occurring in the community. The accuracy of notification data may vary between states and territories or over time due to different surveillance practices and as new diagnostic...

Australian vaccine preventable disease epidemiological review series: pertussis, 2006-2012.

Despite pertussis vaccine being available since the 1940s and immunisation programs using combined diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccine since the mid-1950s, pertussis has been the most commonly notified vaccine preventable disease in Australia over the past 20 years. Pertussis notification and hospitalisation data have been available nationally since 1993, and provide different perspectives for...

Australian vaccine preventable disease epidemiological review series: measles 2000-2011.

BACKGROUND Since the introduction of measles vaccine to the vaccination schedule, the burden of measles has substantially fallen in Australia. Despite this, a number of recent measles outbreaks have occurred. The aim of this study was to examine the burden of measles in Australia using notification, hospitalisation and mortality data with the objectives of setting a baseline for comparison prio...

The seroepidemiology of pertussis in NSW: fluctuating immunity profiles related to changes in vaccination schedules.

The pertussis epidemic experienced in NSW in 2008-2009 was likely to be in part due to changes in diagnostic practice since 2007, which amplified disease notifications. We used population-based seroepidemiology as a less biased means of interpreting age-specific pertussis infection patterns in NSW from three serosurveys undertaken in 1997-98 (during an epidemic), 2002 (post-epidemic) and 2007 (...
